The first known rhinoceros was the Indricotherium which lived in Asia and Africa during the Miocene epoch (23 to 5 million years ago). The largest species of rhinoceros is the white rhinoceros which can weigh up to two tons and grow to be six feet tall at the shoulder.
The rhinoceros is a large mammal of the order Perissodactyla. The family Rhinocerotidae consists of five extant genera including the well-known Indian and African species. The word rhinoceros comes from the Greek words ρίς (ris) and κέρας (Keras) meaning “nose horn”.
Rhinoceros are herbivores and live in a variety of habitats including swampy areas grasslands and forests. Indian and Javan rhinoceros live in dense forest habitats while the Sumatran rhinoceros live in swampy areas. African species prefer Savannahs and woodlands. White rhinos are the largest extant land mammal after elephants. All species have thick skin to protect them from predators and thorns. Indian and Sumatran rhinos have one horn while the Javan black and white rhinos have two horns.
